Root canals have a bad reputation, so we’re going to set the record straight. These are very common dental procedures that will be no more uncomfortable than any other procedure if done correctly.
It involves removing dead or infected pulp from within the tooth and replacing it with a filling. Of course, the area is always numbed so the patient won’t feel any pain. A root canal is a fantastic dental treatment that allows us to save teeth that would otherwise have to be removed.
The root canal procedure can often save a tooth
An infected or severely damaged tooth can be saved. Infections and damage to the teeth can be caused by decay, repeated dental treatment, wear and tear, gum disease, hairline fractures, and injuries. So why is it important to save these damaged teeth?
The importance of saving your teeth cannot be overstated. Biting and chewing are easier than artificial teeth, plus it is possible to experience other oral health problems after losing a tooth. This is a much more straightforward treatment than replacing a lost tooth with an artificial one, often a complex procedure. The root canal procedure can often save a tooth and keep it in place when it would otherwise have to be removed. Also by saving your tooth it means more invasive options such as implants are still available to you later in life.

How do I know if I may need a root canal?
An infected tooth requiring a root canal may not cause any symptoms, highlighting the need to have regular check-ups with your dentist in Brisbane. However, there are common signs that this treatment might be required, including:
- Biting or chewing causes severe pain
- There is swelling around the face or neck
- After being exposed to heat or cold, you continue to feel the sensation
- Tooth discolouration
- The tooth is loose
- A painful and swollen gum
- A tooth that is infected develops a pus-filled cavity
How long does treatment take to complete?
Our Brisbane clinic is equipped to complete root canal therapy in one day but it can also take several visits. Root canal procedures typically last between 60 minutes and 90 minutes, but more complicated procedures may last longer.
What is the recovery process?
Your body will naturally heal the area after your treatment, so some tenderness is normal. However, your jaw may also feel tender after keeping it open for a long time. Over-the-counter pain medications usually work well in treating these symptoms, which generally persist only for a short time.
For some time after your root canal procedure at our Brisbane clinic, you may feel that your tooth is slightly different from the rest. The Dental Standard can assist you with persistent pain or pressure that lasts longer than a few days.
Don’t wait until it is too late to see your dentist
Regular check-ups and consultations are essential for your oral health. The Dental Standard aims to take the fear out of going to the dentist, with friendly and professional staff and dentists and fixed rates for all our procedures that make them all affordable.
If you have been putting off a trip to the dentist, give us a call. It can prevent more severe and expensive procedures down the track and put you on the path to better oral health.
Front Root Canal
This involves a thorough assessment of your front teeth regarding root canals. We may use x-rays to give us the full picture. As with any root canal procedure, the relevant area will be numbed before we remove the damaged pulp.
Back Root Canal
Performing a root canal on your back teeth is a more complex procedure and requires more time. Our assessments are always made based on the needs of individual teeth, and we expect these procedures to extend the life of your teeth by many years.
